What changes for you in 2027

A free 30-minute Zoom class: your Social Security raise, Medicare premiums, tax brackets and the senior deduction, RMDs, and the health insurance cliff for early retirees. Education only. Nothing is sold.

Every fall the government resets the numbers that run your retirement: the Social Security cost-of-living raise, the Medicare Part B premium, the income lines for the Medicare surcharge called IRMAA, and the tax brackets. Medicare open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, and it is the one window each year to change your plan. In 30 minutes, Hans Goldstein of the Retirement Literacy Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, walks through what changes on January 1 and what to check before December 31.

Upcoming sessions

What we cover in 30 minutes

  • + Your Social Security raise. The 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (announced in October) and how much of it the higher Part B premium takes back.
  • + Medicare Part B and IRMAA. 2027 premiums are set by your 2025 tax return. Go $1 over a line and you pay more all year. What you do before December 31, 2026 sets 2028.
  • + Drug plans and open enrollment. The Part D out-of-pocket cap rises to $2,400 in 2027 and 15 more drugs get negotiated prices. Why to read your plan's Annual Notice of Change before December 7.
  • + Tax brackets and the $6,000 senior deduction. What moves with inflation, what never does, and why the senior deduction (2025 to 2028 only) changes the math on Roth conversions.
  • + RMDs. Who takes a first required distribution in 2027, the April 1 trap that puts two in one year, and the qualified charitable distribution.
  • + Retiring before 65? The ACA subsidy cliff is back for 2027. For a couple, $1 of income over $86,560 can cost the whole premium credit.
  • + A one-page checklist of what to do before December 31, and open questions.

Some 2027 figures are not official until October and November. We label every number as official or projected and update the class as each one comes out.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. The Retirement Literacy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 41-5062266). The class is education only. Nothing is sold and no one takes commissions.

Do I need to know anything about taxes or Medicare?

No. It is plain English. If you have them handy, your 2025 tax return (line 11, adjusted gross income) and your Social Security or Medicare letter help you apply it to your own numbers.

Will you tell me which Medicare plan to pick?

No. We explain what changes and what to look for. To compare plans, use Medicare.gov's Plan Finder or call 1-800-MEDICARE. California residents can get free one-on-one counseling from HICAP at 1-800-434-0222.

Which session should I pick?

Any of them. The November and December sessions include the official Medicare premiums, which come out in mid-November. If you want to change your Medicare plan, attend before December 7.

Who teaches it?

Hans Goldstein, founder of the Retirement Literacy Foundation. Questions before class: 714-584-4921 or hans@retirementliteracyfoundation.org.
