Notice the AIME column. The age-70 claimant needed the lowest average indexed earnings of the five and still received the largest check — delayed retirement credits do more for the benefit than additional earnings do.

What is the 2026 Social Security COLA?

2.8%. It applies to benefits payable to nearly 71 million Social Security beneficiaries starting January 2026; increased SSI payments began December 31, 2025.

How much do you have to earn for one Social Security credit?

What does it take to actually get the maximum?

Three things at once: 35 years of earnings at or above the taxable maximum, claiming at 70, and a full earnings record with no gaps. Very few workers meet all three — the maximum is a ceiling, not a typical outcome.
